Managing Your Billing Telephone Number (BTN)
Version 1.1
Revised 2024-06-26
Intended Audience
This article is intended for all Wiretap Telecom portal users.
Quick Start
Billing Telephone Number BTN Defined
A Billing Telephone Number is a number that is a reference to your account number. For some carriers a BTN can act as your number rather than being a reference to it. Legacy carriers such as the legacy bell companies used BTN’s as account cross references and, therefore, a BTN is a critical component to the account. Many carriers today still use BTN’s to uniquely identify a subscriber account.
Modern Carriers
Modern carriers such as Wiretap Telecom carried forward BTN terminology in order to avoid confusion with subscribers and legacy carriers, but in modern times a BTN holds little, if any, real value.
Did you know?
The telecom industry sometimes refers to a BTN as an Account Telephone Number (ATN), which is the same as a BTN.
Assumptions and Constraints
It is assumed that the reader of the article already has access to the Wiretap Telecom portal. If you do not have access, please refer to the Wiretap Telecom Portal Sign Up article for assistance.
A BTN must be a phone number on your account.
Viewing Your BTN
To locate your BTN, sign into the Wiretap Telecom portal. Once signed in you’ll either be taken to the multi-account dashboard or directly into your account. If you’re in the multi-account dashboard, please choose the account you wish to work with first. Once you’re in the account, locate the left section bar titled ACCOUNT MANAGE. Click on Manage Plan to expand and then choose Plan Details as shown below:

You’ll then be taken to the Plan Details and Account Management Page. This page provides for a wealth of information such as your BTN, which can be located on the far right side of the page as show below.

I never created a BTN, but one is already listed. How’d it get there?
When your account is initially created your portal administrator’s phone number (collected during account signup) is automatically assigned as the BTN even though the number is not provisioned to the account.
Changing Your BTN
To change your BTN, follow the steps in the Viewing Your BTN section of this article and then click anywhere in the box as show below:

You’ll then see a window appear. Change the BTN by adding your new BTN in the empty box as shown below and then click the Change BTN button:

That’s it! You now have a new BTN.

No. Wiretap Telecom technically doesn’t use BTN’s for anything service or billing related. In fact, we don’t use BTN’s at all for anything other than legacy carrier backwards compatibility.
Can I use a toll free number as my BTN
Yes, you can use any number from your Wiretap Telecom account for your BTN
