Manage Your Default Area Code
Version 1.0
Intended Audience
This article is intended for all Wiretap Telecom portal users.
Quick Start
If you need to get started with how to manage your default area code then watch this short video. It will walk you through
the process of locating and adjusting your default area code.
Default Area Code Defined
A default area code is an optional setting on your Wiretap Telecom account. During account creation your default area code will be empty. A default area code is a convenience for anyone who wishes to dial 7 digits rather than 10 digits when making local outbound calls. This is popular in rural areas of the United States since this was a standard practice implemented by legacy carriers many years ago.
The default area code process is relatively straightforward. If you choose to add a default area code then our carrier switches will prepend that 3 digit area code to any outbound calls that we receive that are 7 digits in length. Therefore, any number received from your PBX that is 7 digits will call the default area code. For example:
If you wish to dial 3055551234 and your default area code is 305 then you can dial the full 10 digits or just the 5551234. In the event that you wish to call another area code, such as 318 then you’ll need to dial 10 digits.
Assumptions & Constraints
It is assumed that the user has access to the Wiretap Telecom portal.
